What's great is the area's natural beauty .... but it is marred by rubbish. Everywhere you look:lagoons, river banks, beaches. Illegal dumping of household rubbish, garden waste, dead animals (eg a pile of possums dumped near the Pilot Hill footpath), broken glass in the sand, plus human waste where freedom camping occurs! More regular, thorough clear ups need to be done and the cost involved for individuals considered. If you want children to play safely and sell a gleaming, clean image to those you want to attract to the area - CLEAN IT UP - it's unsightly, disgusting and hazardous.

There is a dark side to Wairoa which I feel should not be ignored. I don't feel it is right to set outsiders up about coming here. Most of the houses for sale are in bad condition, the community plumbing is in bad need of repair, the local college staff need an overdue attitude adjustment, not to mention the drugs/alcohol/gang and domestic violence. where are the jobs!! Lastly, something needs to be done for our teenagers who roam the streets with nowhere and nothing to do. Fix these so we can truly say with all honesty that Wairoa is a great place to live, work and play.
