Power lines heading underground

Photo coming soon papa management

Campbell Street is about to have a make-over with a section of overhead power lines set to be moved underground.

A joint project between Wairoa District Council and Eastland Network will see the stretch of power line from Clyde Road to Lucknow Street buried underground.

Work started last week and as well as aesthetic benefits the undergrounding process will improve hazard reduction, and the buried lines will be less susceptible to the impacts of severe weather.

The overhead lines are currently on the Clyde Domain side of the road, with the line removal also taking pressure off maintaining and cutting back the recreational reserve trees that had previously grown into the lines.

Wairoa District Council chief executive Steven May said it is great to see Eastland Network including Wairoa in part of their capital upgrade undergrounding process.

“This is a prime example of working as a partnership and the synergies that can be achieved with benefits for everyone.

“A number of other undergrounding sites have also been identified, including the district’s rural villages.

“We have a priority list but at the end of the day it needs to be possible for Eastland and the Council from a technical and cost perspective.”

Campbell Street will also pick up new LED street lighting.

The street lighting is currently attached to the overhead power line poles with new poles and lights to be installed on the footpath side of the street.

Using LED fittings will mean long term savings in terms of energy use and maintenance and will also enhance the urban area lighting by controlling the overspill of light and providing more consistent lighting areas.
