Work begins on walkway extension at Whakamahia

Work begun last week on a new limestone walkway extension that will continue from Rangi-houa / Pilot Hill down to the Whakamahia/Lagoon road intersection.

Wairoa District Council Engineering Manager, Jamie Cox, says the two metre wide, 2.5 kilometre limestone walkway will extend opportunities for walkers and cyclists to be able to get closer to the beach front more safely.

“The walkway will traverse the left hand side of Rangi-houa dropping down to the bottom carpark and will then run along the left hand side of the road.”

“The work should be complete by the end of April.”

“We’ve already had some success with our limestone walkways around town, with the James Carroll and Ruataniwha road walkways and the Whakamahia walkway extension will be similar.”

“At some point in the future this surface could be even be concreted if demand warranted it.”

“Walkers and cyclists will have more opportunities to appreciate Whakamahia, and doing so safely.”

“The long term plan is to provide picnic tables, barbecues and toilet facilities down at Whakamahia. The new walkway extension is just part of that plan.”

“QRS will be undertaking this work for us and drivers should drive with care while the work is being done,” says Mr Cox.
