Work to begin on new playground site

The Wairoa District Council will begin preparation work for the construction of the town’s new destination playground as soon as next week  at the selected site next to the Community Centre.

This will mean that the area between the Community Centre and the Bridge will become a hive of activity and Council staff advise the community to avoid the area as  earthworks is undertaken to prepare the site.

Engineering Manager Jamie Cox says that while the area is being prepared for the installation of the new playground, we’re just mindful that this area is used by many in the community and we just want to advise caution while this work is being undertaken.

“We’ll be doing quite a bit of earthworks to ensure the area is properly prepared before we install the new playground equipment and this will include raising the land area to mitigate flooding risk," Mr Cox says.

“This work will take a bit of time and we’re hopeful that this will cause as little disruption as possible however the good news is we are working toward the completion of stage 1 of the project before Christmas

“We again acknowledge all the work undertaken by the Wairoa Young Achievers Trust and all those sponsors who contributed to the purchase of the playground equipment.”

“We know they and the rest of the community have been waiting patiently for work to begin and with our weather improving and the area being dry enough, this gives us a chance to start earthworks to prepare the site for the installation of the new equipment.”

“And can I thank everyone in the community for your patience and understanding while this work is undertaken."

Mayor Craig Little says it’s great to see work beginning on the area for the new playground.

“I know the community is keen to see the new playground in place and Council wants to acknowledge all those who have been involved in the project and who have given generously and sponsored the playground.”
