Female and dangerous dogs de-sexed for free

Wairoa residents who own female dogs or dogs that are dangerous can now have them de-sexed for free through a Wairoa-Gisborne dog de-sexing programme.

Thanks to a contribution from Enterprise Motor Group, Wairoa District Council is teaming up with Gisborne District Council to bring the programme to Wairoa district residents.

The process is simple.

Wairoa District Council is encouraging those who own female and dangerous dogs to drop in to Council’s main office in Queen Street or call the office on 06 838 7309.

Bylaw Enforcement Team Leader Paul van Dorrestein will take your dog’s details and give you a voucher number to receive the free service.

After contacting Wairoa District Council first, dog owners will still need to book an appointment with Care Vet clinic in Gisborne to have the procedure done.

Council can provide you with those contact details.

Mr van Dorrestein says this initiative will be a positive one for Wairoa, and can reduce the overpopulation of reproductive female and dangerous dogs in the district.

“We have a number of unwanted healthy dogs and puppies that are destroyed, simply because there are not enough homes to go around,” Mr van Dorrestein said.

“De-sexing your female dog, or your dangerous dog, is a positive decision to protect your family dog from wandering and breeding unwanted puppies.

“This could also improve the welfare of the dog population here in the Wairoa district.”
