Preparing your pets for an emergency

Pet Preparedness Story pic

You never know when disaster could strike

Having an emergency plan is recommended for all families. This plan should include your pets too! Follow the steps below to make sure your pet is safe during a disaster.

Putting together your pets emergency kit

Your pets emergency kit will need:

  •  A lead, collar, muzzle, a carrier, and a toy (optional),
  • Bedding and/or blankets,
  • Enough food and water for at least 3 days,
  • Bowls for food and water,
  • Any medications and first aid supplies,
  • Your contact information,
  • Vaccination records, microchip number, registration number.

Livestock

Any large animals and/or livestock should be moved into a paddock that is free from floodwaters and power lines. Ensure they have food, water, shelter and are secured.

An evacuation plan

There may be a chance that you’re not home when a disaster occurs. Talk to your family, friends, or neighbours, and organise who will look after your buddy until you are able to reach them. In an extreme event, temporary animal shelters or veterinary clinics may be set up in places like schools, showgrounds, halls etc. Listen to your radio to find out where these may be.

Other tips

It's always a good idea to make sure your animal's collar has ID attached to it that contains your name, number, and address.

Make sure your dog is registered with your local council and that the council has their microchip number. This will help us reunite you with your pet!

Always listen to directions from Civil Defence on your radio and check the Council website and Facebook page.
