Youth Council recruitment process

A recruitment process for the Wairoa Youth Council is underway.

The Youth Council aims to promote the development of a dynamic community for the youth of the future. A key role is to assist the Wairoa District Council with its planning processes and projects, focusing on providing services and facilities that potentially impact young people.

It is also a vehicle for identifying local youth needs and resources and developing youth leadership skills through experience in the representation processes, local government, and civic activities.

The Wairoa Youth Council was launched in 2021 and draws on a rangatahi membership base from throughout the district. It provides the Council with an independent youth voice to support the decision-making process at Local Government level and the opportunity to hear rangatahi thoughts on the impacts of the Council’s decisions.

The Wairoa Youth Council meets every six weeks from February to December, and as required, and reports to the Wairoa District Council. This year Cyclone Gabrielle impacted the Youth Council, with the recruitment process a chance to reset the local group.

The Wairoa Youth Council comprises two representatives from the Wairoa township and one member from the following localities;

o North Clyde (Township North)

o Raupunga/Mohaka (Southern Wairoa)

o Frasertown/Te Reinga (Northern Wairoa)

o Tuai/Waikaremoana (Lakes)

o Iwitea/Whakakī (Eastern Wairoa)

o Nūhaka/Mōrere

o Mahia

The recruitment process began on Monday, July 31 and closes on Monday, August 14, at 5pm.

Youth Council members need to be aged between 16 and 25 years of age and live within the boundaries of the Wairoa district. Potential candidates can apply or be put forward as a result of consultation with local community groups, Iwi, Hapu, Council and other community stakeholders.

Two elected members from the Wairoa District Council and His Worship the Mayor, as ex officio, also sit on the Youth Council.

Membership will be by way of a selection panel. A panel will assess and appoint candidates, and a workshop about the Youth Council’s responsibilities will be held before the first meeting.

Application forms are available from the Wairoa District Council Office front desk, i-Site, Gaiety Theatre and library or email governance@wairoadc.govt.nz. Applicants need to return their application form to the Wairoa District Council Office – 97 Queen Street, Wairoa 4108, referencing ‘WDC Governance Team’ or scan and email to governance@wairoadc.govt.nz
