The Wairoa District Council is getting behind Clean-Up New Zealand Week and the community with a series of district-wide ‘Whakapaipai tō tātau Hapori’ events.

Clean-Up Week is a great opportunity to get your friends, family, school, business or local community group together to participate in New Zealand’s largest clean-up event and to make a positive and tangible impact in your local community.

Wairoa’s ‘Whakapaipai tō tātau Hapori’ events will begin with a community clean-up of North Clyde neighbourhoods on World Clean Up Day, Saturday, September 16, from 9am-11am, meeting at Memorial Park.

Led by the Council’s recently formed Solid Waste team, the local events are part of the annual Keep NZ Beautiful Clean-Up Week campaign, which, in 2022, saw a record-breaking 67,400 volunteers take part, collecting a total of 655 tonnes of waste over an area equivalent to 5,751 rugby fields.

Events are open to the community, and invitations are going out to numerous local schools, organisations and volunteers to join an event or register their own Clean-Up Week event online and receive sponsored waste disposal for what is collected.

To further support the week, the Council has developed a Community Clean-Up kit of flexi tubs, re-useable bags, gloves and tools for volunteers to ‘book and borrow’ for use at their sessions.

As many people as possible are encouraged to join in the clean-up Wairoa events at the following dates and locations:

North Clyde: Saturday, September 16, 9am-11am meet at Memorial Park.

Mahia Beach: Sunday, September 17, 9am-11am meet at the Mahia Beach Reserve Playground.

Pilot’s Hill Reserve: Sunday, September 17, 2-3pm, meet at Pilot’s Hill Reserve.

Marine Parade East: Monday, 18 September 12-1pm, meet at the Library Green.

Marine Parade West: Monday, 18 September 10-11am, meet at the Playground Reserve.

Tūwai: Friday, September 15, 11am-12noon, meet at Central Tūwai Village.
