Riverbank reserve regrassing

regrass area

The green, green grass of home will hopefully be growing on Wairoa’s riverbanks soon.

Wairoa District Council is working to reinstate grass on riverbank reserves with grassing underway.

The contouring of silt has been ongoing, and at this stage, the majority of silt has been retained on site. As areas are levelled, Instant Green from Hawke’s Bay will hydroseed the land.

The riverbank reserve regrassing will take place from the Wairoa Waterski Club, through town and east along Marine Parade to Spooner’s Point and along Kopu Road towards Whakamahia.

Areas that are being regrassed will be fenced off to give the grass a chance to establish.

Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Kitea Tipuna said it will be a real boost to have the riverbank reserves regrassed. “Wairoa is a picturesque town set along the river, and regrassing will help beautify the town centre, settle the dust, and, once established, allow people to use the riverbank area for recreation.

“Please respect the fenced-off areas and stay off the reserves to allow time for the grass to become established.”

Moving forward, the Council is also working towards clean-up work in the town centre and urban streets, including water blasting the main street and using a specialised truck that washes the streets and vacumes up silt and dirt to help suppress dust.
