Wairoa’s Civil Defence team and Council staff are monitoring the forecasted heavy rainfall.
The district is currently under an Orange heavy rainfall warning, with heavy rain expected today and over the weekend.
Between 130 and 180mm of rainfall is forecast over the entire Wairoa district. Civil Defence controller Juanita Savage said this is a significant amount of rain falling on an already wet district.
“Earlier this month, heavy rainfall caused flooding and slipping at Nuhaka, Mahia and Whakaki.
“Rainfall is expected to cause the main rivers to rise to at least alert levels and with the Wairoa River mouth not in an ideal location, the lower reaches may rise and stay high for an extended period - past Sunday.
“We also urge people to be mindful that heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly, surface flooding and slips are also possible, and driving conditions may be hazardous.
“We know additional rainfall can cause anxiety, and we encourage people to please stay calm. We will be providing regular updates through Council’s Facebook and webpage.
If you feel unsafe or are in an emergency situation, please phone 111.
