Te Reinga Bridge nearing completion

Te Reinga 2

The temporary repair to the Te Reinga Bridge is scheduled to open later this month.

Staging works are complete, and construction of the Bailey Bridge began this week.

The Bailey Bridge has been cleared for general access, i.e. up to 100% Class 1 HCV, with a 10km/ hr speed limit and restriction of one heavy vehicle at a time. It will not be open for 50MAX or HPMV vehicles. Weight limit restrictions are in line with the Bailey Bridge at Waikare. A surveillance system for the bridge to monitor for potential non-compliance and structural risk is being assessed.

Te Reinga Bridge was compromised in 2022 weather events and sustained more damage in Cyclone Gabrielle, resulting in its removal.

Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Kitea Tipuna said building a temporary bridge has been a massive job with considerable delays caused by a wet 2023. We know how hard it has been for the affected communities and are so pleased to be in a position where reconnecting this vital part of our district is so close.

“This reinstated access will take a tremendous amount of pressure off, and we are all thrilled that it is nearing completion.”
