Te Reinga’s tourism potential has been further enhanced with a new public toilet now in place on the scenic reserve.
Wairoa District Council secured funding for the toilet through a successful Tourism Infrastructure Fund application in July 2021.
Bridge closures, restrictions and eventual bridge demolition put the toilets on hold, with last month’s opening of the temporary bridge enabling the project to go ahead.
The toilet is based at the reserve on the Ruakituri side of the Te Reinga Bridge, and future works will include a concrete pathway to the toilet and car parking area.
Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Kitea Tipuna said the project will provide a rest area for people passing through and wanting a break and visitors wanting to check out the Te Reinga Falls.
“Wairoa was fortunate to receive this funding, and while it has taken a while to be able to complete the work, this facility can be used by locals and visitors and continues to build on Wairoa as a tourism destination.”
