Crews working tirelessly to restore road networks across Wairoa district

Roads

The Wairoa district has endured what has been one of our wettest winters in a while, and it has put some strain on our local roads.

Our local roading contractors, QRS, are putting in every ounce of their time and effort to restore our road networks.

We would like to extend our gratitude to QRS for their tireless efforts and work in getting our roads up and running.

Council is still assessing a slip plane, and the damage done, on the main trunkline at Black’s Beach, commonly known as the Blowhole.

Council is now looking at options to have a new road realigned towards the existing railway line.

Signs of movement on the road was observed in May, and Council had to close part of the road. A 30km single-lane zone is still in place.

Other roads that are still closed or have a drive with extreme caution warning include Mangaone Road in Nuhaka, the start of Kinikini Road and Tuai Main Road.

Mangapoike Road, at the Tukemokihi Bridge (26.79km from Frasertown) will reopen to the public this afternoon after repairs were done to the bridge.

It is a single-lane, four-span, 48m-long structure with steel beams and timber deck.

The project involved strengthening the bridge and replacing a steel beam that had undergone stress and was deformed.

This required a three-day bridge closure to remove 11m of the bridge deck, remove the bent steel beam and replace it with a new steel beam.
