Wairoa joins global movement for cleaner community

IMG 8149

Wairoa is joining a global movement next month to clean-up our backyard as part of World Cleanup Day 2024.

Council invites residents, local businesses, schools, ECEs, clubs, groups, marae, and organisations to come together for a day of community service, dedicated to tidying up our streets.

As part of World Cleanup Day on Friday 20 September, members of the community, Wairoa District Council, Wairoa staff from Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and the Wairoa Business Association are organising Tiakina te Whenua: Wairoa Clean-Up Day 2024.

The clean-up will focus on picking up rubbish along Marine Parade, Kopu Road and the War Memorial Park-Sir James Carroll Walkway-River Parade area in North Clyde.

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little says the event aims to mobilise our community to make an impact on the cleanliness of our town.

"I commend those within our community who have come together to drive this initiative," Mayor Little says.

"A lot has happened over the past few months, especially with the flood in June, and families are understandably struggling at this time, so this event will be great to lift our spirits a bit.

"We want to show our commitment to keeping our backyard tidy and setting an example for our kids and future generations."

Schools that wish to take part are welcome to register and pick-up rubbish in the immediate area around their school. Rubbish bags and gloves will be delivered to schools that register.

A debrief for the main clean-up will be held at the Wairoa Library Green at 8.30am on Friday 20 September.

Those attending will be given rubbish bags, gloves, and other resources they may need to pick-up rubbish.

Organisers are encouraging whanau to bring with them long-handled rubbish grabbers if they have these handy.

The clean-up will be divided into five sections:

  • Section A – Marine Parade from King Street to Murrae Street
  • Section B – Marine Parade from Murrae Street to Spooner’s Point
  • Section C – Kopu Road from Spooner’s Point to the Wairoa Yacht Club
  • Section D – Kopu Road from the Wairoa Yacht Club to Grant Street
  • Section E – North Clyde around the Sir James Carroll Walkway and War Memorial Park area.

The rubbish collected will be sorted into general waste and recyclables at the library green, before being transported to the Wairoa landfill.

At 12noon, a free community barbecue for the community will get underway at the library green. A water station will be set up to refill drink bottles.
