Wairoa District Council has a strong vision about where it wants to lead the community and a credible plan to get there according to Local Government New Zealand chief executive Malcolm Alexander.

Mr Alexander told the mayor, councillors and council officers they should be extremely proud of the result of its most recent Local Government CouncilMark report.

Council received a CCC rating which Mr Alexander described as a snapshot in time.

Mayor Craig Little says “Councillors and I would have loved a higher mark.”

“We have to remember where we have come from and what we have achieved and we should be really pleased with what we have achieved, but we still have a lot of work to do.

"We have to also remember that this report was done some time ago.

“We are well aware of the work we have to do, it has been a hard journey over the past three years, and Councillors and I want to commend our staff for all their hard work in getting the vision that our community have asked us to put in place.”

Mr Alexander said the report clearly shows council understands its issues.

"If an organisation does not have a credible vision about where it wants to be then it will meander all over the place.

"Wairoa does have such a vision together with a strong commitment to get there.

"There is nothing more important than that in my view."

"The report clearly shows Council is moving forward and in my view is on a strong, upward trajectory.

"Council’s challenge now is to execute its plan and also learn from the suggested areas for improvement in the report.

"With a united team and a new and energised chief executive success will follow."

Wairoa chief executive Steven May welcomed the observations in the report saying it is great to have feedback to assist the council to move forward.

"We want council and our district to be the best it can be and having support from people who can identify areas for us to work on is of great benefit."
