COUNCIL will be installing weight restriction road signs on Kinikini Road, at Mahia, after another assessment of the road this week.
Transport Asset Manager Libby Young says the road will be open, but there will be restrictions for vehicles over two tonnes. A permit is required to enter Kinikini Road for all vehicles over two tonnes.
Ms Young is encouraging anyone who has any queries to contact her on 06 838 7309.
“Installing these signs means residents can manage their business and we can work with them on trucking arrangements, like restrict movements for a couple of days after heavy rainfall” Ms Young says.
Cracks appeared at the Taylor’s Bay end of the road nearly two weeks ago. After assessing the road, Geotechnical Engineers advised Council to close it in the event of a rain storm.
Ms Young says the road is not secure and residents on Kinikini Road are advised that there will be short-term and long-term closures planned in the future.
“We would like to encourage all other members of the public to keep away from the area, we are only allowing access for residents who have light vehicles when conditions permit,” Ms Young says.
“Civil engineers have determined that due to the steepness of the slope and likely slip surface there is a risk of rapid failure of the slip, especially during large storm waves and after rainfall events or extended periods of wet weather.
“It is therefore recommended that the road is closed during these times.”
More details around the slump and access to Kinikini Road will be outlined in public communications as it becomes available.
If you require any further information regarding this road, you can contact Ms Young on 06 838 7309.
