Wairoa's new freedom camping signage goes up around the district

The Wairoa District Council is rolling out its new Freedom Camping signage throughout the district this week just in time before the busy Christmas break.

Mayor Craig Little says the new signage is pretty clear and is keen to see Freedom Campers adhere to the new bylaw.

“The new bylaw is more in line with the Freedom Camping Act and one of the main things that this does, is that it allows us to serve infringement notices to anyone breaching our bylaw.”

“We had some issues last summer and we don’t want that to happen again.”

We want to encourage responsible Freedom Camping in Wairoa, to really welcome those people who want to enjoy the awesome places in our district. But those people who don’t play by the rules will be fined.”

“I understand that the majority of freedom campers visiting Wairoa are responsible and do their bit to make sure they are respectful of our district and our community. It’s a small minority that ruin it for everyone else.”

“It’s also good that we will have additional support in our bylaw enforcement team this summer to help monitor freedom camping,” Mr Little says
