Wairoa Public Library busy preparing from Summer Reading Programme

Staff at the Wairoa Public Library are busy gearing up to once again deliver their popular Summer Reading Programme which will start next Monday, December 14.

“As we head into the summer months and school holidays, our children tend not to engage in reading. Research has found that a slide in summer reading can account for a month of reading loss in children,” says Manager of the Wairoa Public Library, Sandra Hughes.

Reading Recovery Teacher, Robyn MacKay, says “as a Reading Recovery Teacher I believe reading and being read to over the summer holidays is crucial for all children. I fully endorse the Library Summer Reading Programme as it’s a fun way to support children reading.”

The Wairoa Public Library will offer two reading programmes this summer. "This is the 19th year we have run a summer reading programme and we feel it really makes a difference to the children of Wairoa."

"We have 140 places on the programme 'Get Carried Away with Books' is for children from 2 to 13 years old. The programme 'Teen Summer Reading' is for teenagers 11 to 18 years old and we have 15 places available for teens. Places are limited and there has been a steady flow of registrations so far. It is on a first come, first serve basis, so get in quick and register,” says Ms Hughes.

Mother of three, Tamsyn Morunga, fully recommends the Wairoa Public Library’s Summer Reading Programme. “Our family has been involved in the Summer Reading Programme for eight years and it's been a wonderful catalyst for encouraging our three children to become passionate readers”.

To register, fill in the registration form, available from the Public Library or go to the Wairoa Public Library website and register online. Registration forms can be dropped into the library, faxed to 06 838 8547 or scanned and emailed to wrpstaff@xtra.co.nz..

"Our gratitude to the Eastern & Central Community Trust cannot be overstated. Their continued support allows us to offer a free summer reading programme that we believe will benefit the children of Wairoa", says Ms Hughes.
