Amalgamation – The people of Wairoa now get the opportunity to finally have their say

The Local Government Commission has released its final proposal for Hawke’s Bay Local Government Reorganisation and Mayor Craig Little is relieved that this proposal is now finally able to be put to the people of the Wairoa district.

“The power of deciding the future of our community is now in the hands of the people of the Wairoa district and the whole of the Hawke’s Bay region.”

“It is such a relief to have this final proposal, and now the people of the Wairoa district can finally have their say.”

“We have updated our website to make available all the necessary information, including the final proposal; and the relevant information about the process of what to do next.”

“This process has been really frustrating at times, interesting to read that the Commission has decided not to proceed with its draft proposals for single councils in Northland and Wellington. Instead the Commission will return to those communities to work with them and seek to develop other options to address the challenges those regions face.”

“In any event, we have certainty now from the Commission about their final proposal. We will adhere to the guidance put out by the Commission about what affected local authorities can and cannot do as prescribed in the Local Government Act and we will provide balanced and factual reference material that assists our affected electors to make a better-informed decision about either promoting or signing a petition or voting in a poll.”

“I cannot emphasise enough, that the power of deciding the future of our community is now in the hands of the people of the Wairoa district and the whole of the Hawke’s Bay region.”
