An increase in the number of old cars being dumped on properties around the district has prompted Council to run a short-term car disposal amnesty.
Wairoa District Council chief executive Steven May is keen to see old vehicles being disposed of correctly, and as a response to the noticeable increase in cars being dumped at properties around the district the free disposal amnesty will occur.
“Given the number of old and dumped vehicles in the district, and the eyesore they can create, I encourage people to bring the vehicles to the landfill and recycling centre.
“They need to be empty of fuel and other waste and de-registered.
“Usually dumping a car at the landfill carries a weight-driven cost. However, in a bid to try and clean up the number of dumped cars in the district disposing of vehicles at the landfill will be free, providing the vehicle meets the criteria.
“Last year Council received half a dozen complaints about the site on Kaimoana Road and last week we received a report of three vehicles being dumped on Airport Road.
“Properties with an accumulation of old cars really drag down the look of our district.
“The free disposal will only be available for a limited time, so people are encouraged to make the most of the opportunity.”
Anyone wanting more information about the disposing of old vehicles should contact the Property team at the Wairoa District Council so the disposal can be arranged.
