Dog owners have until the end of the month to register their dogs in order to receive the $10 discount.
Dog registration fees are used to maintain a safe and healthy environment for residents, dog owners and their pets.
Fees pay for dog control and law enforcement campaigns and education in schools, community groups and businesses signage for exercise areas and canine promotional materials, administering the dog pound at Kaimoana Road and administering the dog register, application forms and tag distribution
Dogs are classified under four classes with a $10 discount across each class if the registration is paid before the end of the month, August 31.
After August 31 the following fees will be applied.
Class D- Classified dangerous dogs $385, Class M classified menacing dogs $160, Class W classified working dogs $60 and Class S being all other dogs $95.
Wairoa District Council chief executive Steven May thanked the majority of dog owners who re-register their dog/s on time and are responsible dog owners.
It is a requirement to have all dogs registered by three months of age. Owners of unregistered dogs face fines up to $3,000 in addition to the registration fee.
Owners who want more than two dogs on an urban property also need to apply for a special bylaw licence.
Council has also developed the Selected Dog Owner Policy to reward responsible dog owners.
The policy rewards responsible dog owners, who are complying with Council’s Dog Control Policy and Dog Control Bylaw, with a discounted registration fee of 12.5% on top of the early payment discount set in Council’s fees and charges.
To become a ‘Selected Owner’ several requirements must be met. These include:
• your dog being microchipped
• ensuring your dog registration is always paid before August 31 of each year
• history proving good dog ownership
• no record of impounding or infringements
• if you have more than two dogs on the property you must have a permit
All dog registrations can be applied for and are payable at the Wairoa District Council office or online.
For more information of the Selected Dog Owner Policy or any questions relating to dog ownership contact Council’s Compliance Team Leader Paul van Dorrestein at the Council offices phone (06) 838 7309.
