Keeping children safe is the focus of a Council driven swimming pool fencing campaign.
The Wairoa District Council building team is about to undertake a district-wide audit in line with Government legislation introduced in 2017 to help keep children safe around swimming pools.
Most swimming pools, even temporary pools, now require fencing or a barrier.
New Zealand law states that all pools with a depth of 40cm or more, must be fenced and have restricted access under NZ law.
Pool owners will also need to take out a building consent to construct an approved fence or barrier.
The consent cost is $150 including GST.
Council’s building team will need to inspect the fencing around pools to ensure it meets the current law and it is a requirement that the pools and fencing are inspected every three-years.
This legislation clearly sets out the types of fencing property owners need to have around swimming pools.

If you are unsure if your pool requires fencing, please contact the Wairoa District Council Building team on 06 838 7309 or email consents@wairoadc.govt.nz to discuss your options.
