Weather bomb mop up

Road flooding

Wairoa is drying out after last week’s wet weather.

Wairoa District Council chief executive Steven May said last week’s weather event dumped around 130mm of rain.

Council staff managed a blockage issue with the town’s sewer network which was caused by a piece of fencepost in the sewer pipe.

“Council put out extra portable toilets to cope with the issue and are investigating how the fence post got into the network.

“We would like to remind residents that only the three Ps go down the toilet- poos, pees and paper.

“Please don’t treat the toilet like a rubbish bin. If you put anything other than the three Ps into the toilet it can cause blockages which is unpleasant for everyone concerned.”

Mr May said generally the district’s roads and 3 Waters network held up well with the system benefitting from the proactive maintenance stance being taken by Council staff.

Mr May thanked all those Council staff who worked to keep the district’s vital services running in difficult conditions.

“With more wet winter months ahead we will continue to ensure our systems are operating as effectively and efficiently as possible and continue to make improvements where possible.”
