Chief executive resigns

Wairoa District Council chief executive Steven May has resigned from his position.

Mr May said he has been reflecting on the impact COVID-19 has had on communities and families and has decided to leave Wairoa to provide support to his family.

He thanked Council staff, the senior leadership team and elected members for their support during his time in Wairoa.

He also thanked the community for their support, as evidenced by Council receiving the National Association of Local Government Information Management Most Improved Best Customer Service Experience Award last year.

Mr May has held the chief executive position for nearly three years having moved to Wairoa in early 2018.

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little thanked Mr May for his service to the district and wished him all the best.

“Family is always most important, and we have seen that more than ever during these challenging COVID-19 times.”

Kitea Tipuna, Council’s Group Manager Community and Engagement, has been appointed as the interim chief executive officer.

Mr Little said Council has robust systems in place to ensure the Council operates as business as usual until a permanent appointment is made.
