A brand-new modernised toilet facility that will cost Council the same as upgrading the existing toilets will soon be built at Clyde Court.
The Wairoa District Council had set aside $30,000 to spruce up the public toilets on Queen Street which were tired looking and needed upgrading.
However, a successful application to the Central Government Tourism Infrastructure Fund means a new modernised toilet block can be built using external funding at no extra cost to ratepayers.
Wairoa District Council interim chief executive Kitea Tipuna described the new toilet arrangement as a total win.
“We had budgeted to spend the $30,000 anyway as the toilets needed upgrading. Now our $30,000 is a partnership with Central Government which will see a brand-new toilet block built with no additional Council funding.
“Our budgeted money would have enabled us to carry out a tidy up so to be getting a brand-new modernised facility for the same investment is great news.”
Mr Tipuna said the Clyde Court toilets are used by lots of travellers and tourists with a new modernised unit creating an improved first impression.
The new toilet block will also link in with the Te Wairoa E Whanake CBD redevelopment. It will be around half the size of the existing toilet block which will mean more reserve area around the unit.
Disconnection and demolition work has started and temporary toilet facilities, portaloos, will be on site over the next few weeks while the new toilet block is built.
Other nearby toilet facilities include the Destination Playground on (Marine Parade), North Clyde (River Parade) and the I-Site (Corner Queen and Paul St)
In total Council received $450,300 from the Tourism Infrastructure Fund. This money, along with $50,000 set aside by Council for budgeted works, will see a total of $500,300 invested into the Clyde Court toilets, installations of ‘big belly’ rubbish bins across the district and new of public toilets at Pilots Hill.
It is hoped this improvement work, which has been delayed due to COVID-19, will be completed before Christmas.
