Rates review proposal hearing next week

Website article General Rates Review 2020 01

More than 250 submissions have been lodged in relation to the Wairoa District Council rates review proposal.

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little thanked those people who took the time to lodge a submission.

“Council went beyond the legislative requirements to consult on this very important issue. We know this proposal is a fundamental change in the way Council distributes the rates and we recognised the importance of giving as many people as possible the opportunity to have their say.

“We consulted more than we ever have and at every opportunity we had, we encouraged people to put their opinions forward.

“I actually thought we would get more than 250 submissions and need to assure people we will also be taking feedback from stakeholder and community meetings and caravan sessions into account.”

An extra-ordinary Council meeting will be held next Tuesday, December 15 from 10am - 4pm and Wednesday, December 16 from 9am - 1pm to hear submissions on the rates review statement of proposal.

Council deliberations will then take place which will be a process of thoughtfully weighing options emphasising the use of logic and reason and taking into account the submissions and community feedback from the engagement meetings and caravan sessions.

Council is expected to make a decision through a vote or consensus on December 22.
