State Highway 2 will be closed at Tahaenui Bridge, near Nuhaka, from just before midnight on Saturday 15th May to 5am on Sunday 16th May 2021.
Waka Kotahi is widening the bridge - the last single-lane bridge on State Highway 2 between Wairoa and Gisborne.
New bridge beams on either side of the existing bridge deck are being placed by a crane which needs to sit on the bridge, so the state highway will be closed in both directions.
An alternative route is available for all vehicles except High-Productivity Motor Vehicles (HPMV) between Gisborne and Wairoa via Tiniroto Road during the closure, which is sealed.
All vehicles will need to plan around the closure or queue at Tahaenui Bridge.
Temporary toilets will be provided for drivers that need to wait at the site.
Waka Kotahi has been working with heavy haulage companies and emergency services to ensure they can manage their services around the short closure, with provisions for emergency services to get through the site if required.
The SH2 Tahaenui Bridge widening project is part of the regional package of the NZ Upgrade programme.
This programme contains projects that will address key challenges our regional state highway networks face including safety risks, resilience and congestion problems, accessibility and travel time reliability.
The projects will also support regional economic development.
