Hot ashes likely cause of Wairoa landfill fire

Rubbishj

Hot fire ashes dumped with rubbish is believed to be the cause of a fire at the Wairoa landfill on Thursday.

The rubbish was pushed over the landfill dumping wall with the likely cause being the ashes igniting and causing a fire to start.

The fire brigade was called and the fire quickly extinguished.

The landfill site was closed to the public so the area could be monitored to ensure there were no further flare ups.

The landfill was expected to reopen tomorrow (Saturday, May 8).

Council staff and landfill contractors remind members of the public to please not dispose of hot ashes with rubbish.

Often, even though ashes can appear to be completely out, even a very small ember can spark a fire.
