Massive boost to Lambton Square upgrade

A $65,000 boost from the Lotteries Grants Board has provided a massive thrust to get the Lambton Square upgrade project over the line.

The grant brings the total pool of money to almost $150,000, allowing for a complete revamp of the facility before it plays host to the Ross Shield Tournament in September.

WDC Economic Development Officer Roz Thomas said this latest grant, which came via the Young Achievers’ Trust, was a great example of how organisations could work together to come up with a positive contribution to the community.

“We worked closely with the Trust to develop an application that reflected our common aim of revitalising Lambton Square. As a result, we will once again have a sporting venue with quality facilities, which in turn promotes the town as a viable destination to host regional fixtures. The potential economic benefits of this are substantial – another feather in the cap towards making our town an attractive destination,” Ms Thomas said.

“Local clubs who use the facility, including rugby and athletics, also stand to benefit hugely from the improvements.”

The Lotteries grant will be targeted towards renovation work, and installing gas water heating to remedy the problem of limited hot water supply.

Additional funds already committed by Wairoa District Council and Transpower will be used to revamp the grandstand, scoreboard and carry out resurfacing and extensive painting.
