Volunteers from the Wairoa Community Patrol were at Council Forum last week to sign a partnership agreement with the Wairoa District Council.
As part of the agreement, Council will contribute funding to the Wairoa Community Patrol to help strengthen its efforts to increase community safety and resilience in Wairoa, and in raising community awareness about safety issues, and to reflect the work done by the Wairoa Community Patrol in monitoring Council’s CCTV cameras in partnership with the Wairoa Police.
The agreement will also see the Wairoa Community Patrol highlighting any key safety issues and hot spots in the community so that preventative activities can be undertaken by the Police, Council or other groups.
Wairoa District Council CEO, Fergus Power says this agreement underlines Council’s trust and confidence in the Wairoa Community Patrol in supporting public safety in the Wairoa district.
“We have to remember that these are volunteers and like us they take pride in what they’re doing and want Wairoa to be a safe and resilient community.”
“They are additional eyes and ears for the community which is really beneficial and a way of serving the community by supporting our Police.”
“Working in partnership with groups like the Wairoa Community Patrol and the Wairoa Police help us in building community capacity to reduce the frequency of anti-social behaviour like vandalism and graffiti which costs Council approximately $35,000 per year.”
“These types of relationships strengthen our ability to support public safety and safer public spaces. By working together we improve community safety in a coordinated and cooperative way.”
