Summertime is heating up and the Wairoa district is preparing for its usual influx of visitors.
Our beaches, rivers, hills, lakes and waterfalls attract a range trampers, campers, hunters, divers, boaties and anglers.
Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Officer Kitea Tipuna says the district welcomes responsible campers and also encourages the use of designated commercial camping grounds and DOC campsites.
Freedom camping is permitted in any local authority area within the district unless it is restricted or prohibited with these areas clearly marked with signage. Persons found camping on prohibited land will be issued with an infringement notice and directed to the nearest registered camping ground or freedom camping site.
Mr Tipuna encourages campers to care for the district by complying with the conditions set out in relation to each site.
To maintain the district's natural environment campers should use the available public toilets, use the dump stations provided at the Riverside Motor Camp, War Memorial Park on Freyberg Street or the Waikaremoana Motor Camp. Please note there may be some COVID-19 Alert Level restrictions.
Visitors are encouraged to dump their rubbish at the Wairoa landfill.
