Wairoa District Council is calling for local university students for the Wairoa District Council summer internship programme.

Chief Executive Officer, Fergus Power says that Council’s internship programme is becoming so popular that we are having to turn students away.

“We are in the enviable position to take only the best and brightest candidates for priority projects at Council. But what we have seen is that increasingly more and more students are hearing about us and wanting to come and do their internship here.”

“First and foremost however, our priority will be to always consider university students from Wairoa. We want to attract them home and offer them great practical real life experience, things they won’t be able to learn in a lecture theatre or in a text book.”

“They will be able to work across the organisation and work with a great team of people on really interesting projects.”

“This is a key part of a wider strategy, to attract our best and brightest home. To offer them real quality practical experiences that will complement their theoretical studies at university.”

“I’ve heard many people say that we’re sending our brightest minds out to the big wide world. What we need to be doing is looking at ways of attracting them home and bringing with them all those skills and expertise.”

“This is why we’ll be doing a being push for Wairoa university students to come home over the summer to undertake an internship with us.”

To be eligible for a Wairoa District Council summer internship, students must be at least in their second to last year of a Bachelor's degree, or in postgraduate study. They must have achieved good grades in all attempted courses and depending on which department you will be working in you may need a current and full driver's license.

Summer internships are unpaid, but the practical skills and knowledge gained by students have been invaluable.

We have information on our website and we’d be really interested in talking to them about potential internship opportunities over the summer”, says Mr Power.
