If you want to provide an independent youth voice to support Local Government decision-making then the Wairoa Youth Council is an ideal opportunity.
The Wairoa Youth Council was launched last year and comprises of nominated representatives from throughout the district.
The Wairoa Youth Council provides Council with the opportunity to hear rangatahi thoughts on the impacts of Council’s decisions on their own generation as the future ratepayers of Wairoa.
Four positions on the Wairoa Youth Council have become available, two in the Wairoa Township, one on the Raupunga/Mohaka (Southern Wairoa) and one in Frasertown/Te Reinga (Northern Wairoa).
Successful candidates will be appointed by early April 2022.
Youth Council members must be aged between 16 and 25 years of age and live within the boundaries of the Wairoa district.
Potential candidates can apply or be put forward as a result of consultation with local community groups, Iwi, Hapu, Council and other community stakeholders. Membership will be by way of a selection panel.
The Youth Council aims to promote the development of a dynamic community for the youth of the future. A key role will be to assist Council with its planning processes and projects, with a focus on the provision of services and facilities that have a potential impact on young people.
The Youth Council is a vehicle for identifying local youth needs and resources and developing youth leadership skills through experience of representation processes, local government, and civic activities.
The Wairoa Youth Council meets every six weeks from February to December, and as required, and reports to the Wairoa District Council.
Two elected members from the Wairoa District Council and His Worship the Mayor as ex officio also sit on the Youth Council.
