Locals urged to share their thoughts with Council

As guidelines start to relax around COVID-19 limitations, Wairoa District Council’s elected members are looking forward to more interaction with members of the public.

Mayor Craig Little said over the past two years it has been difficult to engage with the community because of COVID-19 restrictions. However, all elected members are looking forward to more relaxed guidelines which will mean more opportunities to meet kanohi-ki-te-kanohi – face-to-face.

Members of the public can share their thoughts with elected members through the Wairoa District Council’s Forum meetings, or if you would prefer a one-on-one, the regular Wednesday ‘Meet the Mayor’ appointments.

The Council forums are designed to enable members of the public to bring matters to the attention of the local authority and elected members.

Mr Little said the forums are an integral part of Council’s engagement. “The Council Forum is an opportunity for you to tells us what you agree with, what you are concerned about, disagree with or feel should be changed or what other issues you would like considered.

“We are always prepared to listen to other people’s thoughts and suggestions. I know we have some innovative people in our community, and I would love to hear how they think we can grow our town, or anything else they would like to discuss for the betterment of our district.

“Council forums are held every six weeks and we genuinely want to hear what people have to say. We want to continue to engage and listen to our community and encourage people to share their thoughts at the public forums.”

If no one presents at a forum elected members still meet and will workshop topics, but Mr Little said it is a shame to miss an opportunity to hear from members of the public.

The next scheduled Council Forum is Tuesday May 31, 2021, with people encouraged to register their interest in making a presentation as early as possible.

If you would like to present to Council, please make a request by emailing governance@wairoadc.govt.nz or call into the Council offices and ask for a Council Forum application form.

To have a face-to-face meeting with the Mayor, please call the Council offices on 06 838 7309 to make an appointment.

Public forum dates for the remainder of the year are as follows: 31 May, 12 July, 23 August, 04 October and 15 November.
