Te Reinga Bridge has reopened to vehicles and pedestrians but will continue to be monitored.
The bridge was opened today (Friday, January 13) at 2pm.
A full assessment has now been carried out with inspections and calculations indicating the bridge is safe to again be travelled on.
As a precaution, the bridge will be monitored over the weekend, and if there is any sign of movement, it will be closed again.
The bridge was closed at 2pm on Tuesday, with the high levels of the Hangaroa/Ruakituri River triggering the closure as a safety precaution.
Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Kitea Tipuna thanked members of the Te Reinga and Ruakituri community for their ongoing patience. We had always signalled that this temporary bridge repair design could be vulnerable, and we appreciate the understanding we receive from most community members.
“It is disappointing that vandalism occurred with the gate locks that prevent access across the bridge being cut and taken, indicating people used the bridge even though it was closed. The decision to close the bridge was based on public safety, and if there are future closures, I hope everyone respects the decision.
“Thank you also to Council staff and engineers who have worked effectively and efficiently to ensure the least disruption.”
“A reminder, the bridge is open to light vehicles only with a three-tonne limit at any one time, a 10km speed limit and only one vehicle on the bridge at a time please.”
