The Te Reinga Bridge will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians from 6pm this evening, (Monday, February 13) due to rising river levels.
Wairoa District Council staff have been closely monitoring the effects of the Cyclone Gabrielle weather event with heavy rain causing the river to rise rapidly during the afternoon.
High river levels and flood flows are trigger points to close the bridge as a safety precaution in line with the Trigger Action Response Plan developed as part of the temporary design repair.
Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Kitea Tipuna said with more rainfall expected, from a safety perspective, closing the bridge to vehicles and pedestrians is the only option.
“Our team will continue to monitor and assess the situation. Public safety is paramount, and we thank the community for their ongoing patience.”
Council will update the bridge status via direct messaging, Facebook posts and website.
