Stay away from Te Reinga Bridge

Te Reinga Bridge

“Stay away and off the sagging Te Reinga Bridge” is the warning from Wairoa’s Emergency Management team.

The bridge, which was damaged a year ago, has now suffered significant further damage including the loss of a middle pier. The slumping of the middle section of the bridge is worsening and engineers have major concerns the bridge structure is nearing total collapse.

People and vehicles need to stay away from Te Reinga Bridge. This is an extremely serious situation. Council has warned in the past that there were safety concerns around Te Reinga Bridge, but the additional damage which occurred in Cyclone Gabrielle has pushed the safety concerns to the extreme.

The bridge is being closely monitored and data that is being collected is showing the deterioration that has occurred over the last 10 days. There is a particular concern that the bridge could collapse given the heavy rainfall forecast for today and overnight.

Public safety is paramount, and we urge everyone to please take this messaging very seriously.
