Wairoa District Council is now asking the local community to have its say on whether it should make any changes to its current Dog Control Bylaw.
Consultation on the policy is now open and will close on the 30th of June. A summary of information and submission forms can be collected from Council’s main office in Wairoa or online at www.wairoadc.govt.nz.
The purpose of the Dog Control Bylaw is to enable Council to set standards to be observed by dog owners.
It provides controls around the keeping of dogs in the Wairoa District to minimise danger, distress, and nuisance caused by dogs.
Under the bylaw, dog owners are responsible for ensuring their dog is under control, or it is confined in a manner so that the dog cannot freely leave their property at all times, as is also required by the Dog Control Act 1996.
All owners or persons responsible for a registered dog shall ensure that Wairoa District Council is promptly notified of any change of ownership or address, both within the district and transfers into or out of the district.
Furthermore, the owner or person responsible for a dog must ensure the dog is restrained by a lead that is secured or held by a person capable of physically controlling the dog while in any public place or area not designated as an off-lead exercise area.
Those who make a written submission may choose to make an oral submission. Hearings of oral submissions are tentatively scheduled for the 11th of July.
Please indicate on your submission forms if you wish to speak to your submission.
