We have heard your feedback, the collection of flood-affected items and silt in our township will be extended for another week. Our priority is helping our people recover from this extreme event.
Council is working through a process to be compensated by Central Government for the cost of collecting and removing the flood-affected items and silt. There is a risk that Council may have to pick up the bill for this additional collection, but we believe the benefit far outweighs the cost. We want to be able to clear all this away – and urge ONLY THOSE who are affected to make the most of this service.
We want to help our community and we will not leave these impacted people in the lurch. This collection situation will be reviewed and will have to stop at some stage, but will at least continue until next Friday, March 10.
We know this has been a stressful time that has put a strain on our community, please remember it has also put a strain on our landfill. We are working to ensure that the landfill can cope with the increased pressure it has taken over the last few weeks and have several factors to take into consideration including the need to test the silt and balance the health and safety of our contractors as they manage the high volumes of rubbish.
It is important the landfill is not open during the week as the number of trucks and heavy vehicles going in and out to manage the increased volume of rubbish would pose a health and safety risk for our community.
This weekend the Landfill & Recycling Centre will be OPEN to the public from 8am – 4pm both Saturday and Sunday. The landfill is operating as per usual with weigh-in, weigh-out and payment (Eftpos and cash available). It will then close again from Monday 6 March to Friday 10 March to allow contractors to continue with their services. Collection of flood-affected items will continue to occur next week, with a plan of how this will be managed to be communicated later in the day. Thank you for your understanding and please be patient in these unprecedented times.
