Please stay away from damaged bridges

bridges

Local people are being urged to please follow the safety messaging around cyclone damaged bridges and roads.

Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Kitea Tipuna said the damage caused to Council’s roading infrastructure is extreme. “We are asking people to stay off Te Reinga and Te Puna Bridges in particular, because there is a very real threat of total collapse of these bridges.

“We need people to understand these bridges have been assessed by engineers and the dangers are very real with a high chance these bridges could collapse. Our priority is protecting our people.

“We have put barriers in place, signage and communicated with our rural communities, but we are still getting reports of people walking over these bridges.

“We know it is frustrating and the limited access is making a difficult situation even more challenging. However, this is not a case of the Council being overly cautious, this is a very real danger and please everyone, for your own safety, stay away from damaged infrastructure. This also includes using extreme care and following restrictions when driving on our roading network.”
