The 2023 Census collection has been paused, and will be extended, in areas impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle.
Wairoa people will not be fined for not completing the census by 7 March 2023 – Stats NZ’s efforts are focused on supporting people to take part and be counted.
Census activity will only start when it is right to do so. Once started, census collectors will be in communities where needed until 1 June 2023.
At that time there will be on-the-ground assistance, including census support events, if people want or need help to complete their census forms.
The census collection is being designed with iwi and the community to get the timing right and to ensure the right support is in place.
People do not have to wait for census forms. You can do the census online now by requesting an access code at www.census.govt.nz.
