Hub for post-cyclone support

WYAT 002

A partnership between the Wairoa District Council and the Wairoa Young Achievers Trust has seen a community hub, to offer post-cyclone funding support and advice, set up in town.

The hub is based from the Wairoa Young Achievers Trust (WYAT) new home, in the former Westpac bank building on the corner of Marine Parade and Paul Street.

The intent is to complement existing services, by providing post-cyclone support, particularly around how to source and access funding, as well as helping and directing people on how to apply for appropriate funding streams.

Part of the aim is to create a venue for agencies and organisations that aren’t on the ground in Wairoa to be able to have a space to operate from, with other appropriate agencies encouraged to join in.

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little said he has had a lot of people asking what funding is available to help us in our times of need? are we eligible? is the Wairoa Mayoral Relief Fund available?

“After talking to the Chief Executive of Wairoa’s Young Achievers Trust WYAT Denise Eaglesome-Karekare and the Chair James Baty, we decided to kick off the hub, where along with support for the Mayoral Relief Fund applications, we will also be able to help people and direct them to the right place, agency or organisation.

“There is a lot of support available, but often people are unsure if they qualify or meet the criteria. This hub is about enabling people by providing help around eligibility and general how-to advice as well as any other advice or help that can be provided.”

The hub is operational, and will grow as more organisations come onboard, with the main street location accessible for all community members wanting assistance.
