Council is assessing an existing slip plane on the Nuhaka-Opoutama Road, at the eastern end of Black's Beach (commonly known as the Blowhole).

Council's Engineering Manager Jamie Cox said signs of movement on the road were observed on Tuesday last week. This week the road has formed a significant crack across and through the centre line.

For the short term, Council has closed part of the road and is opening a 30km single-lane zone in the area. The single-lane road will be moved towards the existing KiwiRail line.

Mr Cox says the slip plane has been exacerbated by erosion and saturated soils.

"Geotechnical engineers are working closely with Wairoa District Council to look at the existing structure, and the future options for this part of the road," said Mr Cox.

"Methodically, we have to get our plans and procedures correct and look at all of the options available, to ensure our Mahia community and visitors can access the area safely from now on and into the future."

Council says it cannot determine how long it will take before the road is safely reopened to two lanes.
