Community Centre management being sought

Wairoa Community Centre

The Wairoa District Council is seeking registrations of interest from qualified organisations to manage the Wairoa Community Centre.

After 13 years of managing the Wairoa District Council-owned asset, Sport Hawke’s Bay (SHB) has advised it will finish operating the centre on June 30, 2025.

As a result, the Council is calling for expressions of interest from partners who can effectively operate and maintain the facility, improve service delivery, enhance community engagement, and ensure long-term sustainability.

The centre includes a swimming pool, gym, sports courts, and a high ropes course and operates seven days a week.

Information detailing the scope of the management is available from www.gets.govt.nz and closes at 5pm on December 20, 2024.

At an earlier Council meeting, elected members had indicated they were keen to explore expressions of interest from suitably qualified providers, which could see a range of operation models considered, particularly as they have been made aware there are organisations that specifically deliver this type of bespoke management.

A key focus is maintaining the current service levels and looking at growth opportunities that could allow the community centre to grow as an essential community hub.

The Council acknowledged it was an unsettling time for the staff currently employed by Sport Hawke’s Bay and working at the community centre. It is hoped a decision on future management will be made as soon as possible so current staff know where they stand regarding future operations of the centre.
