Wairoa District Council is growing future leaders through an internship on the QRS (Quality Roading Services) Wairoa board.

Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Kitea Tipuna said the Council wants to encourage the development of an emerging group of future directors in Wairoa by providing an opportunity to work alongside an experienced board as an intern director for QRS.

“Council is a supporter of good governance and, alongside Quality and Roading Services Ltd (QRS), has identified the local need for the next generation of business leaders to be introduced to governance in the district. In establishing this intern programme, WDC and QRS hope that it will encourage diversity and grow skills and broaden the pool of local candidates who have the experience to be considered for directorship positions.”

Mr Tipuna said the role would particularly suit a local person who is passionate about Wairoa’s success and interested in beginning their governance journey. The internship is for one year and would suit someone who has an interest in becoming a professional director, ideally having some commercial and governance experience, a high standard of personal integrity and being able to demonstrate a reputation for sound judgement.

Quality Roading Services (Wairoa) Ltd is 100% owned by the Wairoa District Council as a Council Controlled Trading Organisation (CCTO) and specialises in roading maintenance and construction. QRS has a wealth of civil engineering and specialist knowledge and undertakes physical works contracts on roading, roading maintenance, civil construction and other construction contracts both in the public and private sectors. It also manages its own concrete batching plant.
