Wairoa District Council has appointed an interim Chief Executive while the recruitment process is carried out.

Malcolm Alexander will take up the interim role. Mr Alexander has previously been involved with the Council, advising on strategic matters, and was Chief Executive of Local Government New Zealand from 2012- 2020.

Current CE Kitea Tipuna announced his resignation late last year after three years in the top spot and a total of 10 years with the local authority. Mr Tipuna will finish with the Council in early April.

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little said the Council is very lucky to have someone of Malcolm's calibre and local government experience to carry out this interim position.

“Malcolm has extensive experience in local government, strategic planning, regulatory affairs, government and media relations, and stakeholder management. His advisory work with Wairoa District Council has given him a good understanding of our organisation's goals and challenges and makes him an ideal candidate for this interim position. He will not be a candidate for the permanent role.

“Malcolm’s appointment will provide the stability and leadership needed during this time of change. I am confident that he will uphold the values and mission of our organisation while we continue our process for a permanent CE.”

Recruitment company Robert Walters New Zealand is managing the recruitment process. Mr Little said the CE role is pivotal, and it is important to get it right. “We are fortunate Kitea is remaining in Wairoa, and we look forward to Council having a continued relationship with him.”
