Physical work is starting at the Te Reinga Bridge site on Ruakituri Road.
QRS contractors will be working on-site on a temporary solution which aims to restore some load-bearing capacity on the bridge which will enable pedestrian access, and possibly light vehicle access, over the bridge.
The design plan involves providing support to the undermined piers and will require the contractors to be on the bridge deck for short periods of time. While the contractors are on the bridge deck, remote sensors which measure small degrees of movement in the bridge will be monitored extremely carefully to ensure the safety of all personnel on or around the bridge during construction.
QRS contractors will be undertaking on-site precautionary measures while they work in such a high-risk environment and activity will be constantly risk evaluated and monitored by engineers.
Please remember, pedestrian access over the bridge for members of the public is still strictly prohibited. Te Reinga Bridge is in an extremely dangerous state and must not be used or crossed over.
Please stay away from the bridge and the bridge abutments on either side. These areas will become busy as physical site work gets underway and from a safety perspective, people should avoid getting too close to the work site.
The work to restore pedestrian access is expected to be completed over the next three to four weeks. It is anticipated light vehicles will also be able to cross the bridge under this temporary solution, but that will not be confirmed until load testing is carried out once the initial work is completed.
The Te Reinga Bridge was closed to all vehicles and pedestrians at the end of March due to significant structural damage involving two of the bridge piers subsiding.
Gaining pedestrian access has always been the priority and concurrently a permanent solution to repairing the bridge is also being worked on.
