For the first time in 10 years, Steam returns to Napier's Art Deco Festival!
For the first time since 2015, a steam train returns to the Art Deco Festival! Working alongside the festival organisers, as well as a special collaboration with the Central Hawkes Bay Cancer Society - we are pleased to be bringing you 'Steam in the Bay' between the 14 - 16th February 2025. There's plenty of opportunities to jump onboard, tell all of your friends and pick a trip or two…or three?
Arrive In Style - 13th & 17th February
Arrive in style on Thursday afternoon, on Steam Incorporated’s heritage train hauled by a diesel electric locomotive & steam locomotive working together – the steam locomotive's first appearance at the Festival in 10 years! Board this special train at Paraparaumu, Levin, Palmerston North or Waipukarau and indulge in a weekend of festivities. Options available for one-way or return travel.

The Woodville Wanderer - 15th February
Join the Cancer Society of Hawkes Bay, and Steam Incorporated and jump onboard for a grand day out, heading from Napier, down toward Waipukarau & Woodville. This train will be hauled by steam locomotive Ja 1271 and will comprise our fleet of steel passenger cars, featuring our open viewing car!
With over 60 New Zealand-made craft, produce and artisan stalls, multiple food trucks and bougie picnic tables and cheese boards. Waipukurau will be transformed back to the Art Deco era with live music, classic cars and entertainment.
Upon arrival at Woodville, the entire train will be turned on the famous balloon loop for the return journey.
Nestle into your seats for a relaxed afternoon cruising back toward Waipukurau, where we stop for passengers, and to take on water in the steam locomotive, before travelling onward toward Hastings & Napier to finish off the day.

The Opapa Steam Express – 16th February
A short trip steam train trip for Hastings locals! Jump on the train behind steam locomotive Ja 1271, as we head south out of Hastings, through Paki Paki, toward Opapa. After venturing away from following SH2, we navigate sweeping curves and nice straight stretches of track, where you’ll hear the chuff of the steam engine, and the clickity clack of the tracks beneath! We’ll pause briefly at the beautifully restored Opapa Station building as our drivers change ends to our heritage diesel locomotive to haul us back to Hastings. An easy & relaxing day out for the Hastings community!

Hawkes Bay Steam & Cuisine – 16th February
Jump on Steam Incorporated’s red heritage train and indulge in an evening of Steam and Hawkes Bay cuisine! Board the train at Napier and nestle in for an exclusive excursion down through to Otane. Enjoy a beverage from the train’s bar and pick a light refreshment to accompany. Having travelled 60km by rail down to Otane, disembark the train and head to the Otane town hall. Just a sub-10min walk from where the train stops, enjoy a freshly prepared meal by the fantastic local community. Following your meal, we will return to our waiting train, where our heritage diesel locomotive is all set to lead us back up the line to Napier, finishing a unique evening out on the rails!
