The Linden Singers’ concert on Sunday, May 25, will be a choral feast of contemporary and traditional songs about love – all kinds of love: romantic, parental, spiritual and more. The song which gives us the concert title tune will be familiar to many – it was one of the most popular songs of the 1960s and will be heard in a Beatles’ medley guaranteed to get the toes tapping!
Other well-known songs on the theme of romantic love are the jazz standard by Cole Porter “Night and Day,” the Irish song “Londonderry Air” (also known as “Danny Boy”) and Stevie Wonder’s gentle “Isn’t She Lovely” which gives us the thoughts of a proud father contemplating his baby girl. Love in very different circumstances is the theme of a poignant song written by Norwegian composer Kim Andre Arnesen, using words found on a wall in a concentration camp after WW2; the writer preserves his faith and hope by believing in the love of God “even when He is silent”.
The premier performance of a new composition by our multi-talented Musical Director, Jane Pierard, will be sung by the choir and a mezzo-soprano soloist. “Song for Another Life” is based on fragments of text by Hawkes Bay poet Rachel Lockwood. Jane has a philosophy of encouraging young local musicians by giving them opportunities to perform, so to add to the afternoon’s entertainment, two soloists will feature as guest artists in this concert; they are classical guitarist Jacob Pope and young euphonium player Mami Koizumi. And the audience should keep itheir ears alert for a possible surprise guest appearing at the end of the concert!
