Proud to make a contribution

Quality Roading and Services board members have proposed a $1.05 million contribution be made to the company’s owner Wairoa District Council for the financial year ending 30 June 2023.

The record dividend is subject to completion of the final 2023 audited statutory accounts and the QRS board of directors then executing the appropriate documentation.

Board chair Guy Gaddum says the board was unanimous in its decision that it wanted to do the right thing by the people of Wairoa. “It’s been a tough year for so many in the community and we are all faced with new challenges. We’re just proud that what we do contributes to the social and economic sustainability of the region.”

The proposed contribution quadruples last year’s dividend of $250,000. It reflects a record-breaking year for turnover and thousands of extra hours worked by QRS staff and its contractors, particularly in the weeks following Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023.

“The havoc and devastation after Cyclone Gabrielle required a huge response from our staff and local contractors. QRS’s pain reflected that of our entire community, and it is a testament to our hardworking crews that so much could be achieved from inside our region before other help and support could get through.”

QRS is a Council-Controlled Trading Organisation wholly owned by Wairoa District Council. As a CCTO, QRS operates for the purpose of making a profit so contributions can be channelled back to the Council.

Mr Gaddum says right now, the community needs QRS to align with Council’s long term strategic direction and help out where it can. “Anything that comes into the region, and is awarded to QRS, stays in the region.”

“We’re a proud member of this community and a large employer in the district as well as a sponsor of many activities and events. We value our connection and will continue to strengthen these ties by having regard for everyone’s wellbeing and resilience.”

QRS board will present its final report on the 2023 year to Wairoa District Council in October.
